Orange hubbard winter squash at the farm

(Cucurbita) Was originally domesticated in the Andes and Mesoamerica on multiple separate occasions starting about 10,000 years ago. Although many people don't realize it, but pumpkins, squash and gourds all belong to the same family.  There are several subspecies which are the Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbita maxima, and Cucurbita moschata. The Pepo species are what is considered "True Pumpkin".
